Shelly Hughes Announcement on Political Future

Senator Shelley Hughes is excited to be announcing her plans for the coming election season this evening at a public gathering at the Rebarchek Park in Palmer at 6:30pm. The event will be held in the refurbished barn which is located outside the gated area of the State Fair on the south end.

“We are on the verge of big and new things in Alaska,” Hughes stated, “but we need to be smart in the meantime. If we do things right, I have no doubt that the sun will be rising in our great state in a game-changing way, in a way that will positively and multi-generationally impact our livelihoods and our pursuit of happiness.” Senator Hughes added, “We’ve always known Alaska has promising potential. It’s time we work together to unleash and realize it.”

After years of work in the private sector, Shelley served in the House four years before moving to the Senate in 2017. She represented greater Palmer and Chugiak initially, and more recently greater Palmer and the Knik-Fairview and Settlers Bay areas. During that time, she has served as Senate Majority Leader, Judiciary Chair, and Education Chair and as a member of the Senate Resources Committee. Her interest in rebalancing power between the states and the federal government is reflected in her work as Vice Chair of the National Federalism Commission, and her interest in championing innovative and emerging technologies has allowed her to be the Alaska delegate on the NCSL Artificial Intelligence Task Force. The past two years she led the 36- member bipartisan task force focused on food security and the expansion of the agriculture industry while also serving on the national board of the State Agriculture and Rural Leaders.

Senator Shelley Hughes has been known across the state as one of the most accessible and responsive legislators. Her strong belief that a representative democracy only functions well when those being represented weigh in and elected officials listen has been a guiding force. She looks forward to a new pathway where she can intersect with more Alaskans and expand this exchange.
