Carson-Cottle Center Groundbreaking Announced for July 14th
Mat-Su Youth Housing (MY House) is pleased to announce the date and time for the
Carson-Cottle Center’s groundbreaking ceremony. The event will take place at 4 p.m. AKDT on
July 14th, and will be held at the site of the building, 800 N. Wasilla Fishhook Road near
downtown Wasilla.
MY House has been serving homeless and at-risk youth from around the state for 12
years, with a vision to end homelessness and a philosophy of “a hand up, not a hand out.” The
building represents a massive increase in MY House’s service capabilities, in-part through the
addition of 64 more transitional living beds. Additionally, the ground floor of Carson-Cottle has
retail spaces that will be occupied by local businesses, all of whom have agreed to employ MY
House clients as part of the organization’s job-training program in partnership with NineStar
Employment Services. On-site physical, mental and behavioral health professionals will also be
available for MY House clients and the community.
Designed by award winning architect Wil Carson, who is a Colony High School graduate,
the building will serve as a community hub for the City of Wasilla, due to both its location and
the nature of the services provided. The cost of construction and initial operations has been
provided through an appropriation that was spearheaded by the office of Senator Lisa
Murkowski.
The brief ceremony will feature local, state and federal politicians, community members,
MY House clients and MY House board members. Members of the press are invited to attend the
groundbreaking in-person and are advised to be at the location 15 minutes prior to the event. For
those not able to attend in-person, the ceremony will be live-streamed on the “MyHouse MatSu”
YouTube channel and the “My House” Facebook page. Following the ceremony, there will be
light refreshments and a review of project’s current status at the Gathering Grounds Café, located
at 300 N. Willow St. in Wasilla. This event marks the start of an exciting new era for MY House
and we look forward to inviting the community at-large for the Carson-Cottle Center’s ribbon
cutting upon the building’s completion.
